Challenge:

A station was needed at the Miami Airport to collect fire suppression foam from hangar drains and transfer it offsite.

Solution:

Excel delivered a fiberglass station built to handle the long-term chemical exposure and resist corrosion.

Pump Station Details:

Fiberglass Wet Well & Valve Vault, GRUNDFOS Submersible Non-Clog Pumps, Simplex Three Phase VFD Control Panel, Additional Precast Concrete Wet Well with Simplex Control Panel

Pump Station End User

AAR Corp. is an American provider of aircraft maintenance services to commercial and government customers worldwide.

The Challenge:

Volkert reached out to Excel Fluid Group for a pump station with an unconventional purpose at the Miami International Airport. Unlike standard wastewater or stormwater systems, this station was designed to help manage fire suppression foam collected from an aircraft hangar. This system needed to capture the foam discharged during fire suppression events through hangar floor drains and store it temporarily before transferring it offsite to a treatment facility.

Due to the chemical makeup of fire suppression foam, there was additional need for reinforced materials that could endure prolonged exposure to the liquids. The standard materials used in pump stations are often susceptible to corrosion over time when exposed to these chemicals, so durability and material choice became critical for long-term performance.

The Solution:

To meet the demands of the project, Excel provided a prepackaged fiberglass pump station for chemical resistance and reliability over time. The corrosion resistance provided by fiberglass solutions made it a clear choice for the material used on this project.

Excel's packaged system was installed adjacent to the hangar and integrated with the facility's draining system, ensuring the foam could be safely contained and transferred offsite. By using a fiberglass well capable of withstanding corrosion from chemicals, the station is set to maintain its integrity and performance over time.

As an addition to the primary solution, Excel also accommodated a late-stage request for a precast concrete wet well serving a separate storm drain application complete with a single pump and simplex control panel.
