Challenge:

Bay Village needed a pump station to eliminate two sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) under US EPA orders while avoiding increased basement flooding from substantial inflow and infiltration. The project required offline storage capable of handling flows from heavy rainfall up to those generated by a 10-year, 6-hour design storm while minimizing the aesthetic impact of new infrastructure in Cahoon Park.

Solution:

Excel supplied a custom triplex pump station capable of pumping 2,083 GPM at 10 feet of head. The station combined a large HDPE wet well, oversized above-ground piping, and a unique precast concrete building installed directly over the wet well to provide the required capacity while minimizing the system’s footprint.

Pump Station Details:

HDPE Wet Well, Precast Concrete Above-Ground Valve & Controls Building, Three 10 HP Barnes Submersible Chopper Pumps, HDPE Discharge Piping & Valve Header, Triplex VFD Control System with SCADA Integration, Natural Gas Emergency Generator.

Pump Station End User

The City of Bay Village is a lakeside community on the southern shore of Lake Erie that is committed to maintaining reliable infrastructure and essential services for its residents.

The Challenge:

The City of Bay Village needed a solution to address two Sanitary Sewer Overflows (SSOs) within its collection system as part of an order from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). With a significant amount of inflow and infiltration entering the sanitary system from both public and private property sources, eliminating the SSOs alone could have increased the risk of basement backups for nearby locals.

The station needed to pump the sewage flow into the offline storage during heavy rain events, helping eliminate the SSOs while further reducing the risk of basement backups. The proposed system was designed to control wet weather flows generated by up to a 10-year, 6-hour storm event. Due to the project's proximity to Cahoon Park, an area highly regarded by Bay Village residents, the city also wanted to minimize the visual impact of additional infrastructure.

The Solution:

Excel, with the assistance of Chagrin Valley Engineering, designed a custom triplex pump station centered around an 11 ft. diameter by 27.5 ft. deep HDPE wet well. This pump station includes three 10 HP Barnes submersible chopper pumps with a documented design point of 2,083 GPM, or approximately 3.0 MGD. The station was designed to reliably manage the large volumes of water that the application could potentially face.

One of the more unconventional aspects of the project is the placement of the precast concrete building directly above the wet well. The building was built without a floor for shipment and installed over a concrete slab at the site. The unique layout allowed the station's major equipment to fit within a more compact design to help reduce the aesthetic impact of the station in Cahoon Park. The completed system provides the offline storage and pumping capacity needed to eliminate the two SSOs while reducing the risk of basement backups during heavy rainfall.
